RN Patient Advocates, PLLC

Executive Summary:

The field of Patient Advocacy is rapidly expanding.  Why?

371,000 Americans died and 424,000 were permanently disabled because of misdiagnoses. (2023 the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence and the Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institution).  The National Academy of Medicine published a national study on Misdiagnosis (2015) demonstrating 12 million misdiagnoses annually - >$750 billion.

Deaths due to pharmaceuticals –  NIH reports that more than 106,000 persons in the U.S. died from drug-involved overdose in 2021, including illicit drugs and prescription opioids. A properly educated Patient Advocate can prevent such errors utilizing the Medication Safety Program © and the RN Patient Advocacy Process©.

Patient Advocates are needed more than ever – Advocates well versed in all aspects of management of healthcare today.

Advocates need to be clinically adept and up to date with traditional medicine and the more advanced models of Integrative Medicine and Functional Medicine.

Advocates must also be accomplished communicators and teachers as well as managers of the Change Process.

Advocates must be skilled in working professionally with healthcare providers of all kinds.

Despite having the most expensive health care system, the United States ranks last overall compared with six other industrialized countries—Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom—on measures of quality, efficiency, access to care, equity, and the ability to lead long, healthy, and productive lives, according to a new Commonwealth Fund report.

The healthcare system has become an increasingly difficult maze for people.  Health literacy is exceptionally low – nearly 9 out of 10 adults are functionally health illiterate (Center for Health Care Strategies). “Despite being the only constant in their own care, patients have been the one missing player in system-level healthcare decision- making for most of the modern healthcare system.” — Suzanne Schrandt, JD.
